Sonoma CountyThe
Sonoma County wine region is located above San Francisco on the
northern California coast and is served by San Francisco and Oakland
International Airports. Sonoma wineries offer some of the best
Chardonnays, Pinot Noir and sparkling wine that California has to offer. With more than 200,000 acres stretching from the rugged Pacific coast to the Mayacamas Mountains, Sonoma County offers a rich and varied landscape steeped in history. Few districts have more of the character of old California than Sonoma County, and grapes and wine have been integral to its history. As early as 1812, Russian colonists planted and cultivated grapes at Ft. Ross on the Coast. But it was the Spanish Franciscan Fathers who laid the foundation for the California wine industry in 1823 when Padre Jose Altimera planted several thousand grape vines at their northernmost mission, San Francisco Solano in Sonoma. The founding partners, Audrey and Barry Sterling first saw it in the pouring rain in February 1976. Driving down Ross Station Road, they were sure they were lost until they crested the knoll and the view opened up to 300 acres of gentle rolling hills and a wall of trees behind that looked like Camelot to them. Incurable romantics, and having extraordinary vision, they bought the property in just two weeks. • Wine Tasting • Wine Tour • Wine Shop • Wine Club ________________________

The Zellerbachs planted 6 acres in 1953 (now the oldest Pinot Noir vineyard in America) and created the first vintage in 1957. They named their winery Hanzell, a contraction of Mrs. Hana Zellerbach's name, and embarked on what would become recognized as one of California's most enduring and historically important wine estates.
