J. MAKI WINERY at FRENCH CREEK VINEYARDS Who We Are: Our winemaker, J. Maki (mack´e, Finnish), began creating wine in 1973 with Zinfandel grapes from California.
To us, our vineyard is a big garden, where the emphasis is high on
labor and low on chemical input. Since we love our grapes,
sustainability of their environment is our utmost concern.
From picking to processing, our operations are done by hand, with the
grapes gently pressed in small batches. We’re noted for our European
styling, which fosters subtle and complex fruit flavors to develop and
mature over time.
CHRISTIAN W. KLAY WINERY 412 Fayette Springs Road Chalk Hill, PA Phone: (724) 439-3424 Website: cwklaywinery.com Who We Are: Winery owner Sharon Klay and her husband John first developed an interest in winemaking while living in New York City in the 1970s. This interest led them to research and the selection of the nearly 100 varieties of grapes that would be suitable for cool climate growing conditions. When the Klays relocated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, they searched for three years to find a suitable vineyard site. In 1986, the couple purchased a 215-acre farm in Chalk Hill, Pennsylvania. John developed a successful practice as a cardiothoracic surgeon, while Sharon decided to take the original 1,000 vines on the property to 14,000 vines. In 1997, Fayette County’s first commercial winery opened. Named after the Klays’ son Christian, Sharon planned to offer her customers the complete wine experience and soon developed an array of enticing special events for the public, such as murder mysteries and a “Wine & Dine in the Woods” series. • Wine Tasting • Wine Tour • Wine Shop Upper Susquehanna
BIRD SONG WINERY Who We Are: Bird
Song Winery Inc. was founded in 1995 by John Crane on 52 acres of
picturesque Sullivan County countryside just outside the little town of
Dushore. "We believe in the quality of our wine, and our 'down home'
atmosphere. All of our wines are produced from Pennsylvania grapes.
Since 1995 we have been working to develop a wine growing region in the
unique microclimate of the Endless Mountains using varities adaptable
to a short, cold growing season. Some of our grapevines could withstand
up to 25 degrees below zero."
