| Ohio The history of wine making can be traced back to the early 1800's. Nicholas Longworth, a lawyer from the Cincinnati area, saw the potential of the Ohio River Valley to become a major producer of wine. In 1820 he planted the first Catawba grapes. This domestic variety was hearty enough to withstand Ohio winters and the wine produced from it won quick consumer acceptance. The light, semi-sweet wine was different from the other strong American wines of the day. Soon there were many acres of vines growing in the greater Cincinnati area and by 1845 the annual production was over 300,000 gallons. By 1860, Ohio led the nation in the production of wine. As crop diseases, such as black rot and mildew, began to plague the grapes, the Civil war left the grape growers with little manpower. This led to the demise of wine making in southern Ohio. Ohio's AVA Regions are Grand River Valley, Kanawha River Valley, Lake Erie, Ohio River Valley, Loramie Creek and Isle St. George. Total number of Wineries in Ohio (2007): 110 | ![]() |

Silver Moon Winery of Dover, Ohio, only the best juices from the
world's finest vineyards are selected to produce our exceptional wines.
The winemaking process begins at our winery when you taste a sample of
the wine you are going to create. After you choose your wine, you add
the yeast to the juice. We then take care of the process from there on.
We monitor and rack and take care of things to complete the fermenting
process four to
eight weeks after you begin the winemaking process, you return to the
winery for filtering, bottling, corking, and labeling of your own
"creation". You may also add custom labels to the bottles. Custom
labels can feature a special event such as a wedding, anniversary,
retirement, or house warming. Many of our customers use their
"creations" as business promotions.
Your wine can be enjoyed at the time of bottling, but most wines will
improve by aging 1 to 6 months. At Silver Moon Winery, you can enjoy a
quality wine at an affordable price and have a great time in the

wines are available by the glass, bottle or case. You can mix and match
