Kentucky
Yes,
it's true. The first vineyard for wine production in what was then a
very new United States was planted in what is now Kentucky's Jessamine
County in the Big Bend area of the Kentucky River. In March 1796 a
Frenchman from Switzerland, hailing from a winemaking family, named
John James Dufour (Jean Jacques Du Four,) left Europe bound for the New
World to escape the advances of Napoleon's army. He noted that there
were no wineries in the New World, and had read of complaints from the
soldiers fighting there about the scarcity of wine. Dufour felt
that the latitude and climate of Jessamine county, similar to that of
noted European wine producing countries would be ideal.
